AUTHORITY WANTS INFRASTRUCTURE WORKS SPEEDED UP IN ANCIENT TOWN
Updated: 07-01-2008
The administration of Quang Nam Central Province has ordered that infrastructure improvement works on Hoi An ancient town center be completed this year.
The provincial People's committee asked its Department of Culture and Information to work more effectively on its upgrade project on ten streets in the town's center which began in 2006.
The administration also criticized the project's implementation - the department failed to conduct surveys on the site's archeological features and conducted the upgrade on both sides of the streets simultaneously thereby negatively impacting upon local residents, businesses and tourists.
Many residents and visitors have been filling complaints about unwanted signs, fences and construction vehicles cluttering up areas of the town.
The project, which will cost the state a total of VND29.5 billion (US$1.8 million) from money allocated for cultural conservation, also threathen historical artifacts thought to be lying underneath the construction site, according to the committee.
Hoi An was recognized as a World Cultural Heritage site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1999.
